We are off to a\nfantastic start\u2014It looks like almost everyone has competed at least one blog\npost and I am thrilled to see the level of engagement and thoughtful discourse.\nThere have already been some wonderfully insightful thoughts posted and I look\nforward to reading and engaging more with you on these ideas in the coming\nweek. If you have not yet had the chance, please take some time to review and comment\non posts from your classmates \u2013 there are some really great ideas being shared.\nIf any challenges persist in getting your blogs up and running please let me know\nso I can connect you with appropriate supports.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Starting today,\u00a0<\/span>we are moving into the second week of\nUnit 2 in LRNT 521 which continues to focus on Digital Identity and\nPresence.\u00a0<span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">I am hoping that as we\nenter week 3 of our course that you are starting to feel like you are getting\nyour bearings and are beginning to find a bit of a rhythm as you navigate the\nbalance of work, life, and school. I understand this challenge well, having\nspent many years juggling the roles of FT employee, parent, partner, and grad\nstudent. That balance is a constantly negotiated work in progress and it is\nvery common at this point to feel slightly overwhelmed with it all or to feel\nlike a bit of an imposter when it comes to academic writing or have gradschoolitis\n(see below regarding our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.royalroads.ca\/media\/Library\/writingcentre\/Videos\/Gradschoolitis.mp4\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">RRU library message on this\ntopic<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">).<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">I read a quote (attributed to Dale Carnegie) some\nyears ago that has always been helpful to me when I am not sure if I can\naccomplish a task or if I find that I am procrastinating due to lack of\nconfidence:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"editor-indent\" style=\"margin-left:30px;\"><p><i><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Inaction\nbreeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to\nconquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. The video and the transcript are\nalso posted on the Writing Centre\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.royalroads.ca\/writing-centre\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">homepage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Are you feeling anxious about academic reading and\/or writing?<\/p>\n\n<p>Please visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.royalroads.ca\/read\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><i>Anxiety About Reading<\/i><\/a>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.royalroads.ca\/c.php?g=648270\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><i>Anxiety About Academic Writing<\/i><\/a>\u00a0for\ninformation and resources.<\/p>\n\n<p><b><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">This week:<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">In the spirit of taking it one week at a time, this\nweek you should be continuing to work your way through the following:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n <li><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/malat-coursesite.royalroads.ca\/lrnt521\/schedule\/unit-2\/\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Unit 2\n     readings<\/span><\/a><ul type=\"circle\">\n  <li>In\n      terms of reading content, just a comment about the optional reading: the\n      Jenkins reading (optional) does a nice job of expanding upon the\n      participatory culture topic that is also mentioned by in the reading\n      Hargittai, E., &amp; Walejko, G. (2008). Being able to understand\n      multiple perspectives and deeper views on this concept is important as\n      you consider this topic area. So, while you may not read the Jenkins\n      article all in one sitting, it is worth working your way through over\n      time.\u00a0<\/li>\n <\/ul><\/li>\n \n <li><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">completing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/malat-coursesite.royalroads.ca\/lrnt521\/schedule\/unit-2\/\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Unit 2\n     Activity 1<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0creating your WP\n     blog. I know that many of you have already made tremendous progress on\n     this task. If you are experiencing any challenges\u2014academic or\n     technical\u2014please let me know so I can assist with any support you may\n     need.<\/span><\/li>\n <li>completing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/malat-coursesite.royalroads.ca\/lrnt521\/schedule\/unit-2\/\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Activity\n     2<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">, which invites you to map your use of\n     digital technologies as it pertains to the resident-visitor typology and\n     share this map on your blog.\u00a0<\/span><ul type=\"circle\">\n  <li>The\n      discussion that is taking place through the blog comments and Moodle\n      Forum is wonderful! Don\u2019t panic if you have not yet dipped into it, there\n      is not an expectation that you will reply to every blog post). Take it a\n      little at a time, choose ones that you can contribute to and\/or extend\n      the conversation and add in your comments. I also wanted to remind you\n      about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/feedly.com\/\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Feedly<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0aggregator. It will help you\n      consolidate everyone\u2019s blogs so that you can scan them and see where the\n      conversations are happening. In addition, you can always see the posts\n      from student blogs on our course site under\u00a0<\/span><u><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\"><a href=\"https:\/\/malat-coursesite.royalroads.ca\/lrnt521\/blog\/student-posts\/\">Blogs,\n      Student posts\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">but Feedly does a\n      nice job of putting it all in one scrolling space so it is something to\n      consider. Ken Jeffery\u2019s session from the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/KJMALATVS2022\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">MALAT virtual\n      symposium<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0can help you\n      get started with Feedly.<\/span><\/li>\n <\/ul><\/li>\n \n <li><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">As you turn your focus to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/malat-coursesite.royalroads.ca\/lrnt521\/schedule\/unit-2\/\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Unit 2\n     Activity 3<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0this week, just\n     a reminder that it is the\u00a0beginning\u00a0of Assignment 1 in our\n     course, which runs over the length of the course and has the final\n     deliverable due at the end of our time together. However, embedded in\n     Activity 3 are some tasks (Item 3 \u2013 the plan and Item 4 \u2013 peer feedback on\n     the plan) that are to be done over the course of Unit 2.<\/span><ul type=\"circle\">\n  <li>Providing\n      peer feedback can always be a daunting task but I find if you approach it\n      with good,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/teaching.cornell.edu\/teaching-resources\/engaging-students\/using-effective-questions\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">open\n      questions<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0and through the\n      mindset of improvement it can help frame your feedback in a constructive\n      manner. There are a few resources on the RRU library site that may be\n      helpful as you move forward \u2013 specifically\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/library.royalroads.ca\/writing-centre\/writing-tips\/reviewing-other-peoples-writing\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">reviewing\n      other people\u2019s writing<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/library.royalroads.ca\/writing-centre\/instructor-resources\/giving-feedback-student-writing\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">five\n      steps to giving feedback on writing<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">.\n      Page 41 in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/takingmaking\/taking-making-into-classrooms-2\/\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Taking\n      Making into Classrooms Toolkit<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0has\n      a nice section of open, clarifying, probing, option, action and block\n      question stems that you may find useful as well.<\/span><\/li>\n <\/ul><\/li>\n \n<\/ul>\n\n<p><b><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Reading Strategies:<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">A quick note on reading - take your time to\nread\/think through them and the implications of those ideas in your setting.\nGetting back into reading in this way may take time so be gentle on yourself \u2013\nfind a time of day\/flow in your day that works for you to read, focus, and\nconcentrate on a reading and take it from there. Don\u2019t forget to keep a\njournal\/notes on the readings, their key points for you and the citation so it\nis easy to find later when you need it. The citations managers (i.e., Mendeley\nand Zotero) mentioned below may help with that. Once you learn how powerful\nthese tools can be, I suspect that you will never go back to manual citation\nmanagement. <\/span><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">There are a variety of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/library.royalroads.ca\/writing-centre\/writing\/argumentation\/critical-thinking\/reading-thinking-and-writing-graduate-level\/r\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">reading\nstrategies<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0that\nyou may find helpful as you move forward in the program. Scan reading to get\nthe essence of the piece and then returning to do a deeper dive are common, as\nis the need to establish a system that works for you to track the citation, the\nkey points in the work and your thinking around those key points. There are a\nfew videos on the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLq6A_b5nyw_BE01QP__fCN5xuOHzOrxtz\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">MALAT\nplaylist<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0 (YouTube) that might\nbe useful including this\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3SmOq6gENPM\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">one<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">. Some folks use a spreadsheet, others use citations managers like\nMendeley or Zotero (see\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/library.royalroads.ca\/citation-managers\"><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Citations Managers from RRU\nlibrary<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0for more\ninformation). The important part is that you develop a system that works for\nyou.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Okay, I think that is about it from my end for now.\nHave a great day and I am looking forward to connecting with you at our\nsynchronous session this week on Tue, Apr 21 at 5:30 pm PT.
