You may choose to focus your paper on one topic, which you would explore in depth, or up to three, which would mean exploring each less deeply. You must draw on the assigned Unit 1 readings and are encouraged to supplement with additional literature as needed. You are encouraged to consult with your instructor about your choices of additional literature if a question you are exploring is leading you to an overwhelming number of sources and you would like guidance on selecting between them.

These are the kind of questions you might choose to explore, but please do not feel limited by this list:

What makes a good research question, and why does this matter for the kind of research you anticipate doing in this program?

What is the difference between primary and secondary research, and where or how might each be used?

What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research, and how or where might each be used in relation to your research in this program?

What constitutes good evidence?

What is action research, and when would it be used?

Your paper should do four things:

Explain your research interest. What might you be interested in exploring research-wise? If you have multiple different areas of research, choose one, since the purpose of this paper is to think through the foundational principles of research, and not necessarily to advance a precise research area. Provide enough information for a reader to understand your area of research interest, even if that area remains broad and is not yet precisely defined. However, do not provide more information than the reader needs. The goal is to provide enough contextual information for the reader to understand why you are focusing your paper in the way you are.

Introduce the 1-3 questions you are exploring and, weaving in evidence from the readings, explain why they are relevant to your chosen research focus.

Define any terms that require definition. For example, if you are exploring the question of whether to use qualitative or quantitative methods, you would want to define these approaches. Provide enough information to demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the terms, but make sure to leave sufficient space for analysis (#4), since this is where you truly demonstrate your critical thinking.

Critically analyze the topic you are exploring. For example, if you are exploring the question of whether to use qualitative or quantitative methods, critical analysis could involve exploring which method you foresee being relevant to you and identifying the strengths and weaknesses you might encounter in using it. It might also involve identifying questions your readings to date on the topic raise for you, discussing why these questions matter, and identifying what you might do next if you were to explore them.

Please include a brief introduction (one paragraph maximum), which provides a brief overview of the topic(s) and question(s) you will be exploring in the paper, without yet developing the argument itself. Please also include a brief conclusion, which reviews major points, so that your reader leaves the paper reminded of your argument, as a whole.

Your paper will be assessed according to the rubric below, which addresses Course Learning Outcomes A, B, and D.

Length: Maximum 1,500 words, not including title page or references.

Format: Double-spaced, APA 7th edition citations and references, 12-point Times New Roman, one-inch margins.

Value: 20%

Submit: to the Assignment 1 dropbox in Moodle.

If you would like to draw on the previous assignment guidelines, you can find them here.

Course Learning Outcome / Assessment Criteria

Excellent (A+ to A)

Proficient (A- to B+)

Satisfactory (B to B-)

Unsatisfactory (F)

Citation and APA format

All citations and APA format are correct.

Most citations and APA formatting are correct.

Some citations and APA formatting are correct.

Few citations and APA formatting are correct.

Style, Grammar, Spelling, and Organization.
