I hope that your week is off to a good start and that all those\nsupporting the \u201cback to schooler\u2019s\u201d in our class have had a smooth transition!<\/p>\n\n
I just wanted to expand a bit further on the Weller book. In the\nhistory that Weller presents, the first part of the book as many of you have\nidentified in your blogs, representative of an \u201cearly history.\u201d The foundations\nof the read-write Web, the protocol-based Internet, early educational theory\nthat aligns with how the modern Web works, and so on. \u201cEarly history\u201d of course\ndepends on the lens one is using, and depending on how far we zoom out, that\n\u201cearly history\u201d may look different. It may feature film strips in the military\nfor example. Or, the radio as an educational technology. Or, television. While\nWeller isn\u2019t covering these, both the radio and TV have a rich history in the\nfield as they were used in unique ways for distance education. To give you a\nsense of the history of DE in Canada, I have attached a not-for-circulation\nversion of a paper written by colleagues as we worked on the Alberta DE review\nproject several years ago. You can see in this paper that some of those early\ndiscussions focused on access to technology and access to education and how\nthose differ between people, and between contexts.<\/p>\n\n
This week, we are going to move closer to current time and delve\ndeeper into aspects of the Web that brought us the social platform that it is\ntoday. As we are doing so, we are also going to be seeing the field\u2019s\ninterdisciplinary foundations. I am a firm believer in interdisciplinarity\nbecause it allows us to tackle problems or develop solutions from multiple\nperspectives. <\/p>\n\n
For example, we can think about online learning from <\/p>\n\n
\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\na\ndesign perspective (e.g. \u201chow do we design opportunities for deep\nengagement?\u201d), <\/p>\n\n
\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\nfrom\nan engineering perspective (e.g., \u201chow do we create learning opportunities that\nscale to hundreds or thousands of people?\u201d), <\/p>\n\n
\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\nfrom\na data science perspective (e.g., \u201cwhat data do we need to collect to make\nonline learning more effective?\u201d), <\/p>\n\n
\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\nor\neven from a moral philosophical perspective (e.g., \u201cshould the online platforms\nwe are developing be collecting all these data from students?\u201d). <\/p>\n\n
On the other hand, the field\u2019s interdisciplinarity seems to have\ncaused trouble at times, as newcomers may fail to recognize that behind all the\nshiny new technologies there is a long history and that we know quite a bit\nalready about how people learn, how they learn with technology, and how some\npedagogies may serve some goals better than others. The last few years in\nparticular have seen many re-inventions of the wheel \u2013 which as you saw is a\ngrounding idea in the book we are reading.<\/p>\n\n
In terms of the web as the social platform it is today, the Centre\nfor Humane Technologies has created two \u201cdocumentaries\u201d that provide useful\ninsight and context for both social media and AI. They are definitely worth\nyour time if you have not yet seen them. If you have to focus on one, the more\nrecent one on AI\u00a0 (the AI dilemma<\/a>) is worth the time investment.<\/p>\n\n Enjoy the read this week.
