As you explore these models, you will reflect on who you are as a designer, the experiences and perspectives that inform your emerging design identity, and how context influences the choices designers make.

Throughout Weeks 1–3, you will also work toward completing Assignment 1: Comparative Representation of Instructional Design Models.

Use the information provided to keep track of key activities and important dates for Weeks 1–3. In addition to these activities, you are expected to explore the associated weekly readings and resources to support your learning and refer to the course schedule to ensure you are aware of all due dates.

Learning Activities and Assessments Weeks 1-3

Activity/Assessment

Deliverable

Due end of Week:

Community Reflection

Blog post

One (1)

Community Reflection

Participate in the synchronous session or email your instructor a link to your blog reflection (Topic introduced in Week 2 Synchronous Session)

Two (2)

Assignment One

Access the Assignment One description Three (3)

If you are new to instructional design (ID) models or would like a refresher, explore the OER Commons ID models resource and Raible’s (2010) Introduction to ID Models Pressbook for inspiration. You are also encouraged to explore ID models through the lens of your current or desired professional context, such as in-person K–12 education or online adult learning. Consider how factors such as learning environments, delivery modes, and learner characteristics may influence the suitability and effectiveness of different ID models.

Questions for you to reflect on (Weeks 1-3):

What does it mean to think like an instructional designer?

How do different ID models and frameworks help us think?

How do learner needs, context, and experience influence design?

Week one Activity: My Design Identity

As you begin this course, take some time to introduce yourself on your RRU blog. While you may already know many of your fellow cohort members, this is an opportunity to share a different perspective on who you are by reflecting on your experiences as a learner, educator, facilitator, trainer, or someone who designs learning experiences in other contexts. Consider how your experiences have shaped the way you think about learning and the choices you make when supporting others. You might share:

your current or desired professional context

what you value when creating learning experiences

how you are beginning to understand your own design identity

You do not need to be an instructional designer or have prior knowledge of instructional design models or principles. This is simply an opportunity to reflect on where you are starting and share a little more about yourself through the lens of learning and design. Feel free to express yourself through text, images, audio, video, or a combination of formats.

Draw inspiration from your instructor’s example blog post, and explore your peers’ posts throughout the week to begin considering how different contexts influence the design of learning. While you are not graded on the number of responses you provide, you are encouraged to engage with your peers’ reflections by sharing comments, questions, or insights where you feel inspired to contribute.

During the first three weeks of this course, you will explore a range of instructional design (ID) models and consider how they shape the design of learning in different contexts.
