Many thanks to those of you who were able to make it this evening for our Book Club #2. The discussion of the media versus method debate was very engaging. The link to the recording will be herewhen it is ready as well as the questions that we focused on in case others who are meeting up later to discuss would like to know where we focused.
- Place yourself on a spectrum from "Clark is right" to "Kozma is right." What moved you there: an argument, a piece of evidence, or your own professional experience?
- Are Clark and Kozma actually disagreeing, or talking past each other because they define "media" and "influence" differently? Try to state the one point on which they genuinely conflict.
- Can this debate be settled with evidence, or is it partly a philosophical disagreement about how to frame causation in learning?
- Re; your Activity 5 post in a sentence. What made it techno-deterministic? What language gave it away?
- The course asks us to critically analyze debates and myths about learning and technology. What's one myth in your professional world that this debate helps you see more clearly?
I also created a draft (not fact checked) document that overlaid the advances in neuroscience from 1994 onward on top of the three learning theories that were of that time (Behaviourism; Cognitivism and Constructivism). I have added it here for you to play with and explore.
